The massive Walmart Corporation that so underpays its employees they must rely on government assistance for food, clothing and housing, is finally being challenged – and by the oddly named company PUBLIX. Click the link above for the full story and… good onya Florida!
Thought I’d toss in this quote at the last minute:
Publix, through its focus on its staff and customer service, is able to beat Walmart’s shareholder returns, with a compound growth of 18% per year, as opposed to Walmart’s 10.5%. Of course, Walmart is a publicly traded company, while Publix is owned by its employees, so if someone wishes to invest in Publix, they would first need to begin working for Publix, and their rate of ownership is based on their wages. This encourages the hardest workers, those who dedicate themselves to the company, giving them a real stake in the company as they labor.

And my first question is where did he get a loaded gun?
No, wait my first question is why was an 8 yr old playing GTA?!?!
Too angry to ask any more questions.
From The West in Australia:
Police in the United States are investigating a case in which an eight-year-old boy appears to have shot and killed his elderly caregiver after playing a violent video game.
The incident happened at a mobile home park near Slaughter in Louisiana, CNN reports.
A local television station identified the woman as the boy’s grandmother.
“By accounts of relatives of the victim, as well as friends of the family, the victim and the juvenile had a normal, loving, relationship and even shared the same bedroom,” the sheriff’s department told CNN.
The gun reportedly belonged to the woman.
The boy told investigators he accidentally shot the woman while playing with a firearm, but in a statement, police said he “intentionally shot the woman in the back of the head as she sat in her living room watching television,” the sheriff’s department statement said.
The boy won’t face charges.
Under local law, a child under 10 is exempt from criminal responsibility.
The police statement said: “Although a motive for the shooting is unknown at this time investigators have learned that the juvenile suspect was playing a video game on the Play Station III ‘Grand Theft Auto IV’, a realistic game that has been associated with encouraging violence and awards points to players for killing people, just minutes before the homicide occurred.”

Scott Walkers overpaid Bouncer at the Capitol Building
From Politicus USA
The Wisconsin capitol police chief and his top deputy responsible for carrying out Gov. Scott Walker’s unconstitutional arrests of protesters both got double digit pay raises from the governor…
The Journal Sentinel reported:
Gov. Scott Walker’s administration rewarded the new hardline Capitol Police chief and his top deputy with double-digit pay raises earlier this year after moving the pair on paper to phantom jobs for two weeks and then back to their real posts.
Chief Dave Erwin — who has overseen a crackdown on Walker protesters at the statehouse — received an overall salary hike of 11.7%, to $111,067 a year, the same rate as his predecessor. That amounts to an $11,680 annual raise.
That hefty raise was possible only because Walker officials transferred Erwin on Feb. 5 to a ghostposition in the state Department of Administration, according to a copy of the transfer letter obtained by the Journal Sentinel. Then, on the same day, he was shuffled back to his real job as head of the Capitol Police force.
Each of the moves, backdated to earlier in the fiscal year, came with a retroactive boost in pay for Erwin. Under state rules, the chief is a civil servant, not a political appointee.
This is confirmation of what has been long suspected. The Capitol Police are being used as Gov. Walker’s private militia in his battle against free speech, the constitution, and protesters. In total more than 200 people have now been arrested at the capitol for singing.
I highly recommend reading both articles at the links above. Politicus USA provides a concise overview while The Journal Sentinel outlines Scott Walkers activities in full detail.
It should be shocking to know that a U.S. Governor can take taxes collected from his constituents and use them to bankroll his own agenda, including the purchase of his own private militia – this isn’t 1913 Germany, it’s 2013 United States of America. But somehow, it really isn’t. The combination of corporate greed and lying politicians – the love of power and money by a few has become such an accepted, integral part of our American culture that criminal activities like those of Gov. Walker just don’t phase us any more.
Perhaps that’s what the Scott Walkers of the world are counting on.

So… I guess if you have paid for a SWAT team in your town you don’t want them just sitting around, you want them out earning their keep – right?
Local Arlington TX residents whinged to local authorities about a hippie farm in their neighbourhood. They had the nerve to call it The Garden of Eden and farmer Joe looked and dressed just like Jesus!
Well finally one day the police said ‘hmm we’ve got enough complaints to get us a warrant – let’s go bag us some hippies and grass, boys!’ and off the SWAT team went in full military regalia. WOOT!
The head SWATists held the resident family at gun point inside the farmhouse while the rest of the team SWATted outside, When they couldn’t find any actual marijuana plants, they pulled up the vegies (never know what them hippies can hide inside yer okra) and anything green they couldn’t identify without an almanac and tried to find some dope indoors. After ten hours of this fresh air exercise in futility, the head SWAT guy muttered under his breath, Hmm. Nuttin’. Let’s go home boys. And off they rode with their SWAT bus loaded down with – well here let me quote the article:
The police seized “17 blackberry bushes, 15 okra plants, 14 tomatillo plants … native grasses and sunflowers,” after holding residents inside at gunpoint for at least a half-hour, property owner Shellie Smith said in a statement. The raid lasted about 10 hours, she said.
USING YOUR HIGHLY TRAINED AND GEARED SWAT TEAM FOR LOCAL FARM CODE ENFORCEMENT – Ahh… smell that? That’s the full-bodied aroma of Texas tax dollars at work!

Watch out Oregon – the Republicans have elected a real doozey to be their new chairman. This from Mother Jones:
Oregon GOP Chair Wants to Sprinkle Nuclear Waste From airplanes
After months of in-fighting, the beleaguered Oregon Republican Party elected a new chairman last weekend. His name is Art Robinson, and he wants to sprinkle radioactive waste from airplanes to build up our resistance to degenerative illnesses. Robinson, who unsuccessfully ran for Congress against progressive Rep. Peter DeFazio in 2010 and 2012, took over after the previous chair resigned in advance of a recall campaign over her alleged financial mismanagement.
Robinson, who has a Ph.D. in chemistry, has marketed himself for the last three decades as an expert on everything from nuclear fallout to AIDS to climate science in the pages of a monthly newsletter, Access to Energy, which he published from his compound in the small town of Cave Junction.
For a professor of chemistry he has some pretty far-fetched ideas of how the world works. He thinks the connection between HIV and AIDS is bogus, that climate-changing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is good for plant and animal life and that the only reason his college alma mater was mostly white males si because most women and black men are not drawn to an education in a difficult field (like chemistry).
He’s got everything it takes to get Sarah Palin’s attention – he’s white, male, middle-aged, and for all his schooling – pretty stupid. I expect we’ll be hearing more about him in the future, as soon as Palin discovers he does his politicking on Facebook just like her!

Sorry I know I shouldn’t be flippant over someone’s death but considering how nonchalant some gun rights activists are over the deaths of so many innocent children – I am cutting myself some slack for laughing at this article from The Raw Story:
Arizona woman kills husband with shotgun after he insists she learn to use it
By David Edwards
Wednesday, August 14, 2013 10:40 EDT
A woman in Arizona has told police that she accidentally killed her husband with his own shotgun after he insisted that she pick it up even though she told him she was uncomfortable around guns.
The Daily Courier reported that Prescott Valley police responded to reports of a shooting on Gentle Winds Road Monday afternoon, where 56-year-old Gary Wingate was pronounced dead at the scene.
In a statement, the Prescott Valley Police Department said that Wingate’s 54-year-old wife had not been comfortable around firearms, but he asked her to pick up his 12-guage shotgun and hand it to him anyway. The weapon discharged while she was in the process of handing it to him, striking him in the upper torso.
Click link above for full story. I’m sure you’ll love reading about how the sheriff is treating this as a homicide even though all evidence points to an accidental shooting. This is Republican Arizona country. I’m confidant if the shooter had been the husband there would be no questioning his innocence at all.
Some say there are just a lot of unfortunate gun accidents occurring in AZ at the moment. Of course another school of thought could be that Republican woman there have finally found their voice 🙂

From my emailbox this morning:
Palo Alto CA. passes law making it illegal to sleep in one’s car.
On August 6 the City Council of the City of Palo Alto, California passed an ordinance which makes it a crime to sleep in your car. This represents yet another attempt to criminalize poverty and homelessness in this country. If you are found sleeping in your car (which you own) you will be fined up to $1000 (which you probably do not have because you are homeless) or sentenced to jail (in a state with an overcrowding of prisons so bad that the US Supreme Court has ordered it to release inmates).
So I’m guessing the California Highway Patrol advice of pulling off the road and taking a nap when you find yourself falling asleep at the wheel won’t be legal in Palo Alto now. Well sure because the car accidents will be more palatable for the City Council than the possibility of the person napping being homeless.
